Auto Know Commuting: Preparing for a Flood
by A. Montalbano on 08/22/14The Texas Gulf Coast area is prone to flooding and both natives and newcomers need to take action. One of the worst places to be caught when a flash flood occurs without warning is in your car. Flood waters are caused by excess rainfall and can overflow river banks, bayous, creeks, and canals. However, waterways can become blocked by debris causing a backup of water into neighborhoods. Flash floods come rapidly and without warning and commuting becomes dangerous.
Shallow streams crossing the roads may appear harmless. However, within minutes, a shallow stream can turn into one foot of flowing water causing small cars to stall and be swept away. Two feet of rushing water can sweep away SUVs and pickups.
Tips for safety first:
1. Keep alert of weather changes in your area and make sure your cell phone is fully charged.
2. Don't attempt driving in flooded areas.
3. If your car stalls, abandon it and move yourself to higher ground.
4. Keep your roadside assistance number handy.
5. Always keep emergency funds available in the event you cannot get home and must stay at a hotel. Make a plan in advance of where you would feel safe for a period of time.
